Chapter 5 Lift and steering

Steering kits, braces and stabilizers

A Cummins puts a lot of weight over the front axle. Add big tires and the factory steering linkage, box mount and frame have more to handle.

Linkage

Heavier tie rods and drag links resist flex with big tires. See the crossover steering kit, the heavy-duty bolt-in steering kit, the 2nd gen HD steering kit and the 4.5 and 5th gen linkage.

Steering box brace

A brace ties the steering box to the opposite frame rail to cut flex. Dodge Off Road makes the 1994-2002 brace and the 2003-2008 brace.

Stabilizers

A steering stabilizer damps kickback. It can mask worn parts but does not fix them. See stabilizers and the stabilizer clamp.

Death wobble

A violent front-end shake after a bump, mostly on solid-axle trucks. DrivingLine and MotorTrend both point to worn or loose steering and track bar parts as usual causes. Pull over safely and slow down. For symptom-by-symptom steering diagnosis, see our sister site's steering symptom guides.
