Chapter 1 Ram owners

Owning a 12-valve Cummins Ram

The 12-valve 5.9 is the simplest Cummins Ram: a mechanical injection pump and no engine computer controlling the fuel. That simplicity is why people still buy them, and why they get modified.

What makes it different

The 12-valve ran in Dodge pickups from 1989 into the 1998 model year. Fueling is mechanical: early trucks used a Bosch VE rotary pump, later 2nd gen trucks the inline P7100. There is no engine control module running the fuel system, so there are fewer sensors to fail, but also no self-diagnosis.

Maintenance focus

  • Oil, filters and coolant on your manual's schedule. See oil and filters and coolant.
  • Valve lash is adjustable on these engines. See valve lash.
  • Drain water from the fuel filter housing and replace filters on schedule. See fuel filters.

Mods and the law

The mechanical pump makes power changes easy, which is why many 12-valves have been turned up. Federal anti-tampering law still applies to emissions equipment on road vehicles, regardless of age, and states differ. Read first mods and what to avoid first.

Front end on a 2nd gen

1994 to 2002 trucks use a coil-spring 5-link front with a track bar. Worn steering and track bar parts are a common source of wander and, on lifted trucks, death wobble. Dodge Off Road builds 2nd gen parts including the heavy-duty bolt-in steering kit, the 2nd gen steering brace and a heavy-duty track bar for lifted trucks. See steering upgrades.
